Everyone is Creative
Everyone has the capacity to be creative, even if you don’t think you do. Creativity is a process and is an innate skill that everyone is born with. But a lot of individuals believe that because you can’t paint pictures, this means that you aren’t creative. The fact that you can only draw stick figures may be true but that doesn’t mean you aren’t creative. This is due to the fact that creativity comes in different forms and disciplines.
Creativity Is A Skill
I personally never used to think of creativity as a skill that you can learn because everyone treats creativity as a skill you either possess or don’t possess. But after learning about the growth mind set and from a creativity expert, my perspective on creativity changed. This turning point came when I attended a conference and heard a professor from the International Center for Studies in Creativity public speak. He was able to show me that it is possible to improve one’s individual creativity. If you don’t believe me, watch his Ted Talk here.
Creativity Can Be Used In Different Professions
It’s clear that society views creativity as a skill set elite individuals are born with. But creativity is really just a process like shooting a basketball into a hoop. This is interesting especially since creativity is a versatile skill that can be applied in different life situations. For example, creativity is a skill that can truly help an individual stand out in their line of work, no matter the subject. This is even seen throughout history, with some notable creative’s such as Vincent Van Gough, Steve Jobs, Richard Feynman, Josh Waitzkin and Ludwig van Beethoven . These individuals all developed and utilized their personal creativity while they changed the world. In addition, these world changers are notable because they all possessed creativity in different fields. While not one of them was born with a huge amount of creativity, it took practice, tinkering and focus.
So the next time you think you aren’t creative remember this:
1. Everyone is creative in their own way.
2. If you don’t think you are creative you probably haven’t discovered the way you are creative yet.
3. Creativity is a skill that you can develop.
